From email:

We are one of five couples which traveled to China on November 25, 1998. Our daughter was the youngest from the 5 girls. She was born on November 28, 1997 and we just missed her first birthday. Nian was handed over to us on November 29, 1998. Her full name is Nian Dong Fang and we call her Nian. We feel ourselves very fortunate to have her.

We enjoyed our trip to China immensely. Although we have seen just a small part we found China fantastic. The group which whom we traveled was great and we had a lot of support and fun amongst each other. We still meet every three to four months. One of the couples is living more close to us so we see them more then the others.

Nian is doing just fine. She is three years old now and a real girl. She is very affectionate and a real hugger, which we like to do too. She started to talk before she could walk and likes to sing. She already knows so many songs and she learns so fast; it's amazing. She also starts to realize more and more the meaning of words, which sometimes results in funny remarks. for instance the word neighbours. Just last week she was standing in front of our house when she said to my wife: "Mom, the neighbours are living next to us"

We received 2 pictures of Nian in front of the Tongshan Welfare institute. We also know (we are very fortunate) the exact time and of course the date Nian was born. A small note was left with her when she was left behind. We often think of her parents and are sometimes sad that we are not able to let them know that Nian is doing fine, That she a happy child, healthy etc. etc. It is hard to imagine the feelings of any mother and/or father when they are forced to abandon their child. Nian had been raised by a foster mother. They have told us that she was a pensionated employee of the Institute. Nian has been raised well, because she was very well fed and had been given all her injections, which are normally given to babies. We did not meet the foster mother. Apart from the pictures (with a message at the back) we received a small red bag with soil from Tongshan and a small music box in the shape of a piano. Upon opening you could hear the tones of "Fur Elise" and a lady dancer started to dance.
